Want It Enough? Then You'll Make It Happen

🧠 mindset & motivation Jul 14, 2025

Here's the thing about real estate that nobody puts in the motivational posters: If you want to do anything in this world, you have to want it. Not kind of want it. Not "it would be nice" want it. You have to WANT it with that fire-in-your-belly, wake-up-at-5-AM, make-one-more-call-even-though-your-throat-is-raw kind of wanting.

And honestly? Most agents don't want it enough.

I'm not here to sugarcoat this or tell you some fairy tale about how success just falls into your lap if you think positive thoughts. This is about the unglamorous truth of what it takes to actually make it in real estate.

The "Want It" Reality Check

You know what separating successful agents from everyone else looks like? It's not the fancy car or the perfect headshots (though those help). It's showing up when you don't feel like it. It's making the uncomfortable phone calls. It's learning the market data when you'd rather be watching Netflix.

Wanting it means doing the work when nobody's watching.

When your friend who works a 9-to-5 is complaining about working late until 6 PM, you're out there doing evening showings. When they're stressed about one difficult customer, you're juggling five demanding clients and somehow making each one feel like they're your only priority.

That's not martyrdom—that's what wanting it actually looks like.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Motivation

Here's what I've learned: motivation is garbage. Seriously. Those Instagram quotes about "grinding every day" and "hustle until your haters ask if you're hiring"? They're nice for about five minutes, and then real life happens.

Your listing presentation gets rejected. A deal falls through at the last minute. A client ghosts you after months of house hunting. Your motivation disappears faster than a good listing in a hot market.

But here's where "wanting it" comes in: when motivation fails, discipline kicks in. When you truly want something, you show up anyway. You make the calls anyway. You send the follow-up emails anyway.

Discipline isn't sexy, but it pays the bills.

Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions

I see agents all the time waiting for the "right time" to really push their business. Waiting until they know more about the market. Waiting until they have better marketing materials. Waiting until Mercury isn't in retrograde or whatever.

If you're waiting for perfect conditions, you don't want it enough yet.

The market will always be something—too hot, too cold, too uncertain. Interest rates will always be doing something unexpected. There will always be new regulations to learn and new technology to figure out.

Successful agents aren't successful because they had perfect timing. They're successful because they started before they felt ready and figured it out along the way.

The Real Difference Makers

Want to know what actually separates the agents who make it from those who don't? It's not the big dramatic moments. It's the tiny daily choices that nobody celebrates:

Following up consistently. Even when you're pretty sure they're not interested. Even when you're tired of your own voice leaving voicemails.

Learning your numbers. Not just memorizing a few market stats for cocktail party conversation, but really understanding your local market trends, pricing strategies, and what drives value in your area.

Building real relationships. Not networking in that gross, transactional way, but actually caring about the people you work with. Your clients, other agents, lenders, contractors—treat them like humans, not commission checks.

Staying curious. The agents who last are the ones who keep learning. New marketing strategies, changing regulations, evolving buyer preferences. The moment you think you know everything is the moment you start falling behind.

When You Really Want It

When you genuinely want success in real estate—not just the idea of success, but the actual work that creates it—everything changes.

You stop making excuses about why you can't prospect today. You start seeing rejection as data, not personal attacks. You invest in your education, your marketing, your systems, because you understand they're tools, not expenses.

You show up for clients even when it's inconvenient because their dreams matter more than your comfort. You do the research, make the extra calls, and go the extra mile because that's what creates the results you want.

Most importantly, you stop waiting for permission to be successful. You stop waiting for your broker to hand you leads, for the market to be "better," or for some external force to validate your efforts.

The Bottom Line

Real estate isn't a career for people who want predictable schedules, guaranteed outcomes, or constant validation. It's for people who want freedom badly enough to work harder for it than they would for any boss.

It's for people who want to help families find homes badly enough to learn every detail about lending, inspections, negotiations, and market trends.

It's for people who want financial independence badly enough to build their own business from scratch, even when it's terrifying and uncertain.

If you want to succeed in real estate, you have to want it more than you want comfort, certainty, or approval.

The question isn't whether you can make it in real estate. The question is: how badly do you want it?

Because if you want it enough, you'll figure out the rest.

What drives your "want it" in real estate? What keeps you going when everything else tells you to quit? Share your thoughts—this business is hard enough without doing it alone.
